What kind of covering do you envision for your outdoor haven? You could choose to have a simple awning, a thatched roof, a pergola through which the sun's rays can filter through and give you enough warmth on a cool morning, a gazebo from where you can overlook your entire landscape, or a deck with a simple railing to demarcate the area from the rest of your outdoor space. All these elements can lead you to designing outdoor living spaces based on different themes.
You could always go with paintings that show imagery of a pirate ship or a beach crowded with seamen and rugged pirates. Anything that you find marine like in nature can go up as a painting. Just be sure that you place these in your home in a way that doesn't let it clash with something else. For instance, if you go with a large painting, then having it placed in the center of a room like above the bed or on the sides of a corridor leading to another room or the highlight of your living room, should be your prime focus. Go for oil paintings that are either real or lookalikes, which again is an eye pleaser.
I remember walking into this expansive apartment which looked like an old English woman stayed there. It had floral prints and contrasting paint colors that were subdued yet not keeping up with the times. Everything in it from the furniture to the showpieces, went against the entire home's set up. The one thing that did stand out quite boldly and might I add, in my face - was a center table with a smooth finished solid (possibly marble) that had three dolphins bathed in seaform color, standing back-to-back while the table's flat top balanced on their snouts. It was hideous to say the least. They probably should have gone with something more subtle like woodwork and engraved dolphins, and not something out of Alice in Wonderland.
Now everyone can't be lucky enough to own such a place. But reinventing your home from inside to capture the heart of cottage style decorating can be done with some ingenuity and fun. Pick a color scheme out of the many verdant and pastel colors for cottage decorating. Hues of corals, green, pink and yellow would set the tone for daintily beautiful decor. Coziness and comfort are the basics which govern the home decorating scheme of English cottages. Hardwood flooring with matching rugs would lay down the groundwork for this type of interiors. English styled windows are light and windy, allowing light to penetrate the room properly. Choose pretty lacy curtains instead of heavy draperies to get a feel of English countryside. Moreover, fabrics for upholstery, draperies, bed sheets, etc. should be of floral prints and imitate the pastoral setting.
