The walls should be painted in light, neutral colors such as beige and white, so that it appears spacious and at the same time dispels darkness, if any. However, there are always exceptions to this rule. If your hallway is very large and wide, you can experiment with a plethora of bright colors such as red and yellow, as long as these colors go with the interior painting in the other areas of your house. One good idea is to paint it in a neutral shade and just when it is about to end, paint it in two or three shades darker color. If there is an adjoining staircase, you can spice up the look by painting the stairs in some unique colors and patterns.
The decoration in this room also depends on what kind of look you want. The key is to make sure it is not stuffy. Use natural light to your advantage, ensure that there is ventilation. Place the table in such a way that it does not obstruct a pathway. There should be plenty of space for the chairs to be pulled out. Even when everyone is seated, the area should be roomy enough. When it comes to picking dining sheets and napkins, play with contrasts. The right fabric is again essential, so choose one that is easy to wash and does not stain.
Sometimes, the place may appear very isolated compared to other spaces in the house. So, to make it look inviting, add some furniture pieces to it. Console table, foyer table, chairs, and mid-sized cabinets are some furniture items that you can keep here. Remember, not to clutter the way too much!
Use plantation style stutters on your windows to give the plantation look. You can also use matchstick blinds on the windows which are a cheaper option, to give the required look. Keep in mind to match the color of the blinds with the color scheme you are following for the new look. Curtains with antique finish can also be used to style the windows.
